Time Out: Renewal and Perspective |
![]() |
The 2001 conference was held on October 19-20th at West Coast Hotel, Olympia, Washington.
CONFERENCE THEME:
Inspired by the classic 1959 Dave Brubeck Quartet album of the same name, our conference theme this year "Time Out," provides us with an opportunity to reflect on our applications of and responses to "Time." As Brubeck's "Blue Rondo a La Turk" in 9/8 and Desmond's "Take Five" in 5/4 help us navigate within unconventional time meters, we too will explore our use of and relationship with "Time." As in years past, we interpret our theme very broadly. The conference's speakers, panel discussions, papers, and plenary session, will examine how humanities educators, administrators, writers, artists, musicians, and the varied disciplines within the arts and humanities view and define "Time Out" as well as utilize and respond to the vast concept of "Time" itself. Are we making time for "Time Out?"

Tananarive Due is part
of a generation of writers taking African-American fiction into new, unusual
directions. Her novels, The Living Blood (Pocket Books, April 2001), My
Soul to Keep (HarperCollins, 1977) and The Between (HarperCollins, 1995)
are journeys into supernatural suspense - bringing a unique African-American
flavor and sensibility to tales the keep readers awake at night. Due recently published an acclaimed historical novel, The Black Rose (One World/Ballentine, 2000) based on the life of pioneering entrepreneur Madam C.J. Walker. (The book is based on the research of Alex Haley, who died before he could complete the project.) The Black Rose was nominated for an NAACP Image Award. |
